The 16-year-old who pleaded guilty to shooting into occupied vehicles and homes during a March 27 rampage was sentenced today on appeal in Albemarle Circuit Court to six months in Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention, followed by supervised probation and restitution to the victims of over $12,000. Virginia has a strong showing in a new report on welfare reform »

Governor Kaine is highlighting a new report from the federal government that praises Virginia’s success in finding jobs for welfare recipients. Kaine says Virginia has fared the best among the 50 states in terms of job-entry rates for a program called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). He’s quoting from a U.S. Health and Human Services report for fiscal years 2005 and 2006. Virginia had the nation’s second highest rate when it came to job retention for each of those years. Charlottesville’s Peppy Linden (pictured) is the Secretary of Virginia’s Board for Social Services, which oversees the programs. Linden is best known as the director of the Virginia Discovery Museum on the Downtown Mall.

The Albemarle Supervisors will gather feedback on debris burning »

The practice of burning debris in Albemarle County has come under fire. The Albemarle Supervisors plan to hold a work session where public input will be taken. Current options include banning all open burning, increasing the regulation of debris disposal, grinding the material, or taking it to a landfill. Registered nurse Robin Hoffman (pictured) says funds to support enforcement could be a part of the problem.
